The Phillips Foundation Journalism Fellowship Program

NOTICE

The application deadline for the 2008 Phillips Foundation Journalism Fellowship program has passed. An announcement on the program for 2009 will be made later this year, most likely in October. That announcement will appear in our "Press Releases" link. We thank you for your interest in our program and invite you to revisit this site once next year's program has been announced. Please do not submit applications until the 2009 program is announced officially, since requirements, eligibility, the application form, etc., may change.

In 1994, The Phillips Foundation inaugurated its annual Journalism Fellowship Program to award fellowship grants to working print and online journalists who share the Foundation's mission to advance constitutional principles, a democratic society and a vibrant free enterprise system. The Foundation's Trustees serve as judges for the journalism fellowship competition. Applicants propose a one-year writing project on a topic of their choosing, focusing on journalism supportive of American culture and a free society. In addition, the Foundation awards separate fellowships in the following topic areas:

  • The Environmental Fellowship for a project on the environment from a free market perspective.
  • The Shelby Cullom Davis Fellowship for a project on the impact of free enterprise on society.
  • The Law Enforcement Fellowship for a project focusing on some aspect of law enforcement in the United States.

Working journalists with less than ten years of professional experience in print and online journalism are eligible to apply for the fellowship program. Annually, The Phillips Foundation awards full-time $75,000 platinum fellowships, full-time $50,000 gold fellowships, and part-time $25,000 silver fellowships.

The application deadline for the 2008 Journalism Fellowship Program is March 1, 2008. The next round of fellowship winners will be announced in the spring at the annual Phillips Foundation Awards Dinner held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

During the course of the one-year fellowship, journalism projects are delivered in four quarterly installments with the potential to be published sequentially in a periodical or all together as a book.
