Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Fact Sheet
1. Working print and online journalists with less than 10 years of professional experience in journalism are eligible to apply. The Phillips Foundation offers full-time $50,000 gold fellowships and part-time $25,000 silver fellowships. The gold fellowships include a $40,000 fellowship grant and up to $10,000 to reimburse expenses. The silver fellowships comprise a $20,000 grant and up to $5,000 for expenses. Fellowship proposals should focus on journalism supportive of American culture and a free society. The Foundation created this program to provide fellowships for projects to be undertaken by journalists who share the Foundation's mission to advance constitutional principles, a democratic society and a vibrant free enterprise system. In addition to the regular fellowships, the Foundation awards special fellowships on the environment, on free enterprise, and on law enforcement.
2. During the course of the one-year fellowship, the journalism project will be delivered in four quarterly installments with the potential to be published sequentially in a periodical or all together as a book. In addition to the funds set aside to reimburse the Fellow's expenses ($10,000 for a full-time fellowship and $5,000 for a part-time fellowship), the fellowship grant will be paid in four increments to correspond with completion of the quarterly writing installments. An installment must be judged acceptable by the Trustees before payment of the corresponding increment. The winner of a full-time fellowship is expected to devote his or her full energies to the fellowship for the course of a year. Winners of the part-time fellowships are allowed to pursue part-time work during their fellowship.
3. Each applicant may submit only one fellowship proposal per year. Applicants must be citizens of the United States.
4. Applications must be postmarked by February 22, 2011. Please do not fax or email your application or other material. Letters of recommendation must also be postmarked by the deadline date. Please have three individuals familiar with your work and your fellowship proposal submit a letter of recommendation directly to the Phillips Foundation. You can send a copy of this fact sheet to your references to familiarize them with the Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Program.
5. When submitting writing samples with your application, please send five copies of each article, noting date and place of publication. You are asked to submit no more than three samples of your work which demonstrate your journalistic abilities and your support of American culture and a free society. In addition to published articles, books and chapters of books may be submitted as samples of your work. Each part of a series will be considered to be one article.
6. Finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C., in the spring for interviews, and the winners will be announced at an awards dinner at the National Press Club. The fellowships will begin on September 1st.
