POTOMAC, Md., April 08, 2003 --- Making its fourth annual awards, The Phillips Foundation today announced the winners of a record $232,000 in merit-based scholarships for academic year 2003-04 under its Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Scholarship Program. Established in 1999, the Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Scholarship Program offers renewable and one-time scholarships to college undergraduates who demonstrate exceptional achievements as leaders on behalf of freedom, American values, and constitutional principles.
There are 36 new scholarship winners and 17 students receiving scholarship renewals for academic year 2003-04. Last year, the Foundation’s Trustees awarded $185,000 in scholarships to 32 new winners and 10 renewals.
The Phillips Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 to advance constitutional principles, a democratic society, and a vibrant free enterprise system. In addition to the Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Scholarship Program, the Foundation administers an annual journalism fellowship program which provides grants to working print journalists early in their careers.
Recipients of renewable $10,000 scholarships:
• Kelly Coyne of Sacramento, Calif., a sophomore at the University of California-Berkeley, whose award has been designated by the Trustees as the second annual Barbara Olson Memorial Scholarship of The Phillips Foundation in honor of the prominent conservative attorney, author and commentator killed by terrorists on September 11, 2001, in the hijacked jetliner that crashed into the Pentagon,
• Joseph Fairbanks of Norman, Okla., a Stanford University sophomore,
• Charles Mitchell of Glen Mills, Pa., a Bucknell University sophomore.
Recipients of one-time $10,000 scholarships:
• Eric Bates of Erie, Pa., a junior at Denison University,
• Michael McKnight of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., a junior at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Recipient of a renewable $7,500 scholarship:
• Daniel Moody of San Diego, Calif., a sophomore at Arizona State University.
Recipient of a one-time $7,500 scholarship:
• Steve Sexton of Carmichael, Calif., a junior at the University of California-Berkeley.
Recipients of renewable $5,000 scholarships:
• Nancy Barteczko of LaPorte, Ind., a Purdue University sophomore,
• Justin Bell of Huron, S.D., a sophomore at Indiana Wesleyan University,
• Mary Alice “Molly” Cox of Orlando, Fla., University of Florida sophomore,
• Jordan D’Angelo of Kansas City, Mo., a sophomore at Benedictine College (Kan.),
• Paul Dawson of Northridge, Calif., a sophomore at Gonzaga University,
• Alessandra Gonzalez of Houston, Texas, a sophomore at Rice University,

• Teresa Moody-Nichols of Raleigh, N.C., a sophomore at Meredith College (N.C.).

The Trustees renewed the scholarships of 17 students who received awards under the program for academic year 2002-03. They are:
